"Saves up to 23% on heating and cooling bills" — that's the claim on every smart thermostat box, and it's technically true the way "up to" always is. I've been logging whole-home energy use for two years: one full heating and cooling season with a smart thermostat and one with a basic programmable one. Here's what the data actually shows, and the honest math on whether the upgrade pays for itself.
What the Data Actually Shows
Across our test home (a 2,100 sq ft house, gas heat, central AC), the smart thermostat reduced HVAC energy use by roughly 8–12% versus a manual thermostat, and about 4–6% versus a properly programmed thermostat. The often-quoted 20%+ figures come from comparing against zero scheduling — holding one temperature 24/7. That's the marketing's favorite baseline because almost nobody actually lives that way.
The savings came from three behaviors: automatic setback when the house emptied, gentler ramping that avoided aux/emergency heat strips, and (biggest for us) reminders when the filter was overdue.
The Honest Payback Math

One Compatibility Warning
Before buying anything, check your wiring. Smart thermostats generally need a C-wire (common wire) for continuous power. Many older homes don't have one — some models include an adapter, others need an electrician. Also verify your system type: high-voltage baseboard heating is incompatible with almost every smart thermostat. Five minutes with a photo of your current thermostat's wiring saves a return shipment.
The Bottom Line
A smart thermostat saves real money — just not the money on the box. Expect $80–120/year in a typical home, more if you're disorganized about schedules, less if you're diligent with a $25 programmable unit.
